The Forge Leadership Story
We have a problem at work. We face a lack of leadership and an abundance of management. The problem with management is that it focuses on the issues that are only right in front of us and trying to maintain the status quo. It serves the manager and not the team. The mindset becomes “What’s in it for me? Will this get me a raise? Will this get me a promotion?”
I was that manager. I was part of the problem. I spent years managing people, focusing on what was in it for me… no one else. When the promotions, raises, awards, and praise slowed down, I blamed the company.
Then on June 9, 2019, it all changed. I was looking out of my basement window thinking it was time to quit my job of 10 years. It was time to find another place where I could get more raises, promotions, and praise. Then came my moment of clarity. I began thinking of all the people in my life who gave me a chance. Gave me advice. Gave me their time and knowledge. I remembered how great those people made me feel. In that moment I realized that I was in a position to give back to others and help in the way I had been helped... that was my new objective.
The shift I made that day was to prioritize other’s growth and put their successes first. Leadership is beyond management and what’s in it for you. It focuses on creating a vision, empowering others, and inspiring change. Turning management into leadership requires a safe space to think out loud and receive honest feedback from someone we trust. Unfortunately… that is rare in the workplace.
That’s why I started Forge Leadership – to create a space where any leader, at any point in their leadership journey, can think freely, speak openly, strategize and grow as a person and professional. I know the value of having a safe space to develop & the feeling of being “stuck” when it’s not present. Forge Leadership is your space to grow.
